The big questions

What is acid reflux?
Acid reflux or heartburn is caused by acid rising from the stomach to the throat. This can cause a burning feeling in the chest, bloating, or an unpleasant taste. When experienced from time to time, acid reflux can be due to certain lifestyle factors or stress.
How can I treat acid reflux?
Acid reflux is very treatable using medicines called antacids or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These medicines work to neutralise or slow the acid production in your stomach. They provide relief from and can also prevent symptoms.

How acid reflux treatments work

Acid reflux symptoms come from acid travelling from the stomach up towards the throat, which leads to an unpleasant burning sensation.

Medicines called antacids can provide short term relief, particularly after meals. They neutralise and block the acid produced in the stomach from travelling, which prevents symptoms.

Other medicines called proton pump inhibitors work to reduce the amount of total acid produced in the stomach. This provides relief for long term symptoms and acts as a preventative.

Acid reflux treatments: what to expect
Straightforward answers to frequently asked questions.
Once you fill out our simple questionnaire, a clinician will review your answers and recommend the best treatment for you. This includes a consultation with lifestyle advice based on your answers and prescribed medication that will be delivered discreetly to your door, as and when you need it.
With the Acid Reflux Treatment Plan, you can request treatment whenever you need it, or contact our clinical team with further questions at no extra charge.
Our clinical team will review your answers and prescribe the best treatment for you.
Antacids help to manage short term symptoms, such as bloating or heartburn after food, by neutralising the acid in the stomach. If symptoms persist over a longer period, a medicine called a proton pump inhibitor is usually recommended as this prevents excessive acid from being produced.
Antacids will get to work within 30 minutes. This is why they are suitable in the short term to manage occasional symptoms.
Proton pump inhibitors can take 1-2 days to take effect. These provide a longer period of symptom control throughout the day, without further need for antacids.
Our clinical team will advise the length of treatment that’s best for you with a follow-up plan to assess your progress. Some patients require a short treatment plan of 1-2 months, but for others, a low dose over a longer period of time will be more appropriate.
Some lifestyle factors can cause acid reflux or can make symptoms worse.
These can include:
- Smoking
- Some prescription or over the counter medications (most commonly drugs from a family called NSAIDs which includes ibuprofen)
- Eating fatty, salty, or spicy foods
- Eating large meals, or eating too quickly
- Being overweight
- Stress or anxiety
- Excessive caffeine or alcohol
Our clinical team will review your lifestyle as part of your assessment. They will then advise on the best course of action for you to manage your symptoms.
Most patients will experience no side effects from the medicines that are prescribed for acid reflux and will get relief in a short space of time.
For proton pump inhibitors, the main side effects that 1-10% of patients can experience is some initial stomach upset or a headache. This is normally nothing to worry about and should only last a short while. If you experience any persistent side effects, it is important to seek medical advice from your GP or by contacting us via .
Antacids can be taken throughout the day when needed for symptom relief as directed by your clinician. It is never recommended to take more than the maximum quantity prescribed.
If you experience breakthrough symptoms while taking a proton pump inhibitor, you should get in touch with our clinical team
We also recommend getting in touch with a clinician if symptoms feel worse or continue after 7 consecutive days. They can then reassess your condition and recommend the best treatment options.
Acid reflux can lead to some damage in your gut if it is left untreated. With a treatment plan in place from a clinician, it can be easily treated and managed to prevent it from getting to a dangerous level.
